Why a high-fibre breakfast changes your whole day

By Praneetha ·

A bowl of multigrain flakes with fresh fruit

Most of us judge breakfast on protein or calories. Fibre barely gets a mention — which is odd, because it is the nutrient that decides how the rest of your morning feels.

What fibre actually does

Soluble fibre slows how quickly sugar enters your blood. That is the difference between steady energy until lunch and the 11 a.m. slump that sends you looking for tea and a biscuit. Insoluble fibre does the mechanical work of keeping digestion regular.

How much do you need?

The ICMR recommends around 30g of fibre a day for an adult. A bowl of refined cornflakes gives you under 1g. A serving of bran-based multigrain flakes can give you 4-6g before you have added fruit.

Where the gap comes from

  • Refined flour has had the bran removed — that was the fibre.
  • Fruit juice loses almost all of it; whole fruit keeps it.
  • Polished white rice contributes very little.

The easy fix

You do not need to overhaul your diet. Changing what is in the breakfast bowl is the single highest-leverage swap available, because it is a meal most people eat on autopilot anyway.

One swap, made once, repeated 300 times a year. That is why breakfast is worth getting right.

Our Fiber Fuel Flakes are built on a seven-grain blend with added inulin prebiotics, for exactly this reason.

  • fiber
  • gut health
  • cereal
  • breakfast
